Sealants

Sealants When back teeth are developing, grooves and pits are formed on the chewing surfaces. They are impossible to keep clean because the bristles of a toothbrush cannot reach into them. Food and bacteria build up in these depressions, placing the teeth in danger of decay. In fact, 80% to 90% of cavities in children occur in these pits and grooves. Sealants are clear plastic materials that can be painted onto these decay-prone surfaces of the teeth. By forming a thin covering over the pits and fissures, the sealants keep plaque and food out of the crevices in the teeth, reducing the risk of decay.

How Sealants are Applied

The application of a sealant is quick and comfortable. It takes only one visit. The hygienist or dentist cleans, conditions, and dries the tooth, applies the liquid sealant, then allows it to harden using a “bonding” light.

How Long Sealants Last

Sealants generally last from 3 to 7 years, however they need to be checked at regular dental check-ups to make sure they are not chipped, worn, or damaged. If so, more sealant material can be quickly and easily applied on top of the tooth. Good oral hygiene and sensible eating helps sealants last longer.

How Visible Sealants Are

Upon close examination, sealants can be seen. They can be clear, white, or slightly tinted. Because they are used primarily on the back teeth, sealants are rarely visible when you talk or smile.

Cost Considerations

Sealing a healthy tooth is far less expensive than filling a decayed tooth. Having sealants put on healthy teeth now can save you money in the long run by avoiding the costs of fillings, crowns, or caps needed to repair decayed teeth. Sealants may be covered by your dental insurance. Talk to your dentist about costs and check with your insurance company for coverage details.
